I am an archivist, historian, educator, author, and photographer whose work centers on photographs as both material objects and historical evidence.
After beginning my archival career at the Wisconsin Historical Society, I served as Project Archivist and Visiting Assistant Professor at Montana State University. Since 2004, I have worked at Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where I am the Processing Archivist of Visual Resources. My work encompasses archival description, collection access, visual resource stewardship, teaching with original materials, and collaboration with creators, scholars, students, and cultural heritage professionals.
My scholarship and teaching explore the history of photography, American history, visual culture, and archival practice. I have taught at Quinnipiac University since 2007 and continue to make photographs using historical and contemporary processes; this experience keeps material practice close to my work with collections.
